About

Background

I’m Dr Stephen J Newhouse: BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD. 20+ years in bioinformatics, genomics, and life-sciences data science, working across academia, the NHS, and industry.

I’m currently Head of Professional Services and Senior Bioinformatician at Biorelate Ltd. in Manchester, UK. I lead the team that turns Biorelate’s biomedical AI, knowledge graph, and NLP products into real client outcomes in target, drug, and biomarker discovery, indication expansion, and systems biology.

Before Biorelate I held roles at Grid Edge (Data Scientist), Mindwave Ventures (CTO), and UCL (Honorary Senior Lecturer). I spent eight years at King’s College London as a Senior Bioinformatician and Data Science Group Lead at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health, including module-leading the Bioinformatics module of the MSc in Genomic Medicine. Earlier postdoctoral work at the Institute of Psychiatry, University of Cambridge, and Queen Mary University of London, where I also did my PhD in Genetics.

Current focus

  • Lead engineer on Biorelate’s Professional Services internal biomedical AI agent tooling. Agent orchestration, memory, evaluation, biomedical tool-use over a curated knowledge graph. Built for the PS delivery team and now integrated into large-pharma clients’ own internal LLM and tech stacks.
  • Target safety assessment apps for life-sciences pharma clients. Knowledge graph + LLM evidence retrieval, programmatic citation, regulator-ready outputs.
  • Langdock integration. Evaluating and integrating Langdock as a managed-AI platform alongside Biorelate’s own stack.
  • Biomedical AI & knowledge graphs more broadly. Biorelate’s core, applied to target, drug, and biomarker discovery and indication expansion.
  • Agentic engineering. LLM systems, RAG, memory, tool-use, evaluation. See aa-ma-forge.
  • Multi-omics + personalised medicine. Where I think the most interesting signal is right now.
  • Open source & teaching. I still enjoy writing things down and giving them away. See awesome-genetics-software and the archive of older teaching material.

Personal

Outside work I’m a dad, a husband, and an MS warrior. I’m a Mental Health First Aid Champion (MHFA England, 2020) and care a lot about open science, mental health in research and tech, and making teams that work for the humans in them.
